The Marin County Civic Center is one of our County's greatest community assets, and I would love to see it become an even more active gathering place for residents of all ages. More year-round programming—such as outdoor concerts, cultural festivals, farmers markets, food truck gatherings, local art exhibits, and family-friendly events—would encourage people to visit and enjoy the campus beyond conducting County business. I would especially like to see smaller, free or low-cost community events that are easy for families to attend, such as neighborhood fairs with cake walks, carnival games, local vendors, school performances, and community booths. The lagoon would also be a wonderful setting for family movie nights, children's activities, seasonal celebrations, and wellness classes. While the Marin County Fair is a treasured tradition, attending has become a significant financial commitment for many families. Smaller events throughout the year would provide more accessible opportunities to gather and build community. Additional shade should be a priority. The Civic Center becomes extremely hot during much of the year, particularly around the lagoon, parking lots, and outdoor areas surrounding the building. Nearly half of Marin County's residents are children or older adults—populations especially vulnerable to heat. Expanding the tree canopy, installing shade structures, and adding comfortable seating would improve comfort, safety, and access to outdoor events. Finally, while Engage Marin is a valuable tool for gathering public input, I encourage the County to supplement online engagement with paper surveys, multilingual outreach, in-person engagement, and partnerships with community organizations. This will help ensure residents without reliable internet access, computers, or digital literacy can participate so feedback better reflects the diversity of our community.
