If Marin County wants a vibrant future for the arts, it must make its performing spaces financially accessible to the small nonprofits that bring music, theater, dance and other performances to our community. For many local arts organizations, the Marin Center is essentially the only venue capable of accommodating a substantial audience. With little competition, rental costs and required fees continue to rise. For our small nonprofit chorus, presenting just three performances now costs more than $9,000 in facility and related charges—before the many other costs of producing a show. The County needs to act now to make the Marin Center affordable for local nonprofits. Establish meaningful nonprofit rates, eliminate unnecessary fees, and make required production costs transparent and reasonable. These organizations are not just renters—they are community partners. If Marin wants the arts to thrive, it needs to make room for them—financially as well as physically.
