With approximately 65% of County employees commuting from outside Marin, I think there is an opportunity to consider commuter equity as part of our workforce strategy. Long commutes have very different impacts on employees’ time, transportation costs, and quality of life—particularly for those who cannot afford to live near the communities they serve. This also affects recruitment and retention; reducing that burden could expand our applicant pool and make Marin more competitive for new and younger talent. When we think about innovation, I hope we think beyond technology and creatively address what is within our control—commuter benefits, transportation partnerships, flexible schedules, or other approaches that help offset broader cost-of-living pressures. This reflects our values of Equity, Innovation, Respect, and Excellence: supporting our workforce ultimately supports the quality and continuity of services we provide to residents.
